    Mounting a heatsink on G540

I want to mount a heatsink to the back of my g540... but I can't think of a good way to mount it...

thermal goop is not sticky, so that won't work.

    anybody have any good ideas?

right now I have it ziptied but once it's in the case it would look crappy to have the zipties there...

it needs to be removable too since it's too large to fit through the front opening of the box should I need to pull the drive out.

Use longer mounting screws that will pass through the front panel of the G540 and the heat sink.

Apply a nut to each screw, slide the heat sink over the same longer mounting screws then use a second nut on each to hold the heatsink.

Or use longer screws and metal tubes or standoffs then heatsink and nut.

You could also tap the heatsink and no nut would be needed.

sometimes the easiest answers are the ones that are best

my heatsink was not as long as the g540, however it was higher, so I was able to pass screws through under and above the g540 and make a sandwich with the g540 in the middle.

    worked out great.

    Thanks for the advice.

    Please see

We ran some G540s through a battery of thermal stress tests; max current on all 4 axis, max power supply voltage and worst-case motor speed-load conditions.

    g540 heat sink

Just got my G540, testing it with one motor and it gets rather hot. Thinking of mounting a heat sink to the back side. Have not opened it up yet due to warranty issues. Best method would be to add mounting pattern into heat sink and remove the internal screws and replace them with longer screws and use nuts on the back to attach the heat sink.

Does this sound doable?? Should I do something else until the warranty runs out??

Just want to keep it cool and working.

Running 50v at 2.1 amps for 3 axis and 1 at 3.1 amps.

    Hi Kirk,

What you need is one of these. It keeps things nice and cool.

    Cheers,

    Peter.

    Peter,
I don't see that on your website. Is it a 'to be released' product?

    Hi Geoff,

Yes, it is the test board. I am waiting on some parts orders so I can put a batch together.

    Cheers,

    Peter.

    Question

Is that board just blowing air over the Gecko, or is there a thermally conductive heatsink of some sort underneath?

Yes, Best I can tell he is just blowing air onto the drive. I believe that he is also tapping power from the supply feeding the G540 and thus needs to drop the voltage to supply the fans.

I made my own fan unit powered by a seperate power supply to cool the drive. Work great with the air blowing on the drive it stays nice and cool.

It is just blowing Air over the back of the G540. GeckoDrive did some testinging and determined that a heatsink was unnecessary.

    Cheers,

    Peter.
