I did the math on the stepper motors I want to attach to my Gecko 203Vs. Total amperage requirement is only 3 Amps. My PSU (parts ordered already) is going to put out 8 amps. Is this okay? I'm thinking the drivers/steppers only suck out what they need. Is this true or will my ample amps blow my drives or motors? Thanks for your time. -George. |

| The best way of looking at power supply amps is: Amps are the same as $$$ in the bank. If you have $8 (8A) in the bank, your drive can write a $3 check. If you have only $2 in the bank, you will have problems when the drive tries to write a $3 check. Mariss |

| So... voltage aside... my 500,000 watt power supply won't destroy my 203s or my stepper motors. (Fast fuses a good idea?) |

| Well, you switched from oranges to apples on me.:-) If your 500kW power supply is 50VDC @ 10,000A then it certainly wouldn't hurt the G203V. However if your 500kW power supply is 50,000VDC at 10A then it probably would. Fuses are OK to protect the wiring from the power supply to the drives. If your wiring run is short and you can't see any reasonable way it could short out then don't bother. The G203Vs have ultra-fast blow (70 microseconds at 100A) 5A fuses inside. This fuse is the very first thing your power supply current passes through once it enters the drive. By the way; 'fast blow' fuses really aren't all that fast. They are guaranteed to blow in 30 seconds at 200% rated current. 30 seconds is an eternity for electronics; damage occurs within milliseconds. A normal fuse is there only to keep things from catching on fire after they've died. Mariss |
