In the manual it says that the step motor must be a hybrid permanet magnet motor. Why cant a PM motor be used?

I would say that there shpould be no reason why you cant use a pm stepper (Tin Can type), but it may be because a PM type is normally a lot smaller and thus low current, and the current control at very low currents is not that accurate.

Avoid 'tin-can' (stamped sheetmetal) motors. Their magnetics are too miserable to successfully run on a switching type drive.
