Heat sink mounting questions

I just ordered three G201s, and while I'm waiting for them to arrive, I'm building an enclosure so that everything is nicely boxed up as a unit.

I want to mount my G201s on a large aluminum heat sink from an old UPS inverter. The heat sink is 9" x 4", and I have some high volume fans to aim across the fins. If I mounted two G201s flush with the edges, and one in between, I only have 3/4" clearance between the drives. Is this sufficient clearance? I'm not sure what the minimum proximity between drives should be (probably simply missed it in the excellent info at geckodrive.com). I'll only be running 4A@48V/drive.

Also, should this heat sink be grounded to the power supply ground and the logic ground, or should it be isolated?

Thanks,

Billy Byler

Grounded is ok. I am sure it will all be fine the way you are doing it

Take a look at www.IndustrialHobbies.com to get an idea of the heat sink I bundle with the Geckos.

Geckos cool through the bottom, so you can mount them side by side (actually touching) I put about .5” just to give a little wiggle room. Make sure you use silicon grease under them.

Ground the sink to the case and the case to earth ground (the green wire) on a 3-prong cord. Nothing fancy is needed.

Thanks

Thanks for the replies! I was just concerned with with heat issues as I'm going to baby the G201s a bit (although inexpensive, they are the most expensive part of my CNC upgrade). Looks like all 3 will fit nicely on my heat sink.

IndHobby, I wish had seen your page just a day sooner! Well, I still have a mini lathe to upgrade, so I'll be visiting again soon...

Thanks,

Billy
