Hello Jerry, I just tried your link and it doesn't seem to be active?
Attached is a CAD dxf drawing for the correct wiring of the above Gecko stepper drives.
It shows the proper method to fuse the drive supply voltage, the capacitors required on the 201's, the stepper motors, and the connection of step and direction signals to a breakout board.
It also includes the connection and wiring of the 5 Volt logic supply and the proper grounding of same to the breakout board.
Hope this will answer most of the questions for the guys building a system with these Gecko drives.

Sorry my fault thought it was a pdf when it was a dxf.
pdf attached
Phil, Still too many interests, too many projects, and not enough time!!!!!!!!
Vist my websites - http://pminmo.com & http://millpcbs.com
Thanks for making an Adobe Version. I think it looks pretty good. It should help some of these guys who need assistance in designing their machine. Also, for knowing in advance what is required to make their machine work.
Jerry
Thanks to both of you.

Thanks for the nicely done wiring diagram for the Gecko drives.
Can someone add things like relay inputs, estop, etc.? Also, is there any available pcb drawings with parts list for breakout board incorporating all these features like the inputs and outputs from the parallel port to the Gecko drives for people who want to make their own BOB? TIA.
Hey Jerry,
Okay i had a really nice long conversation with Mariss today and it went along these lines.
The +5Vdc can be obtained from the games port pin 1 if you have this on your pc or the USB port pin 1. The parrallel port does not supply any +5Vdc.
The G210 is capable of having Pin 10 as 0Vdc or 5Vdc, so your diagram is corerect for this unit, but the G201 does not work on 0Vdc for pin 10.
At no stage should the ground of the 5Vdc be connected to that of the power supplying your motor. My big mistake.
I am going to ammend my diagram to refelct the required changes.
I believe your diagram is correct Jerry.
cheers
michael
The external functions like relays, estop, etc. will vary from person to person and system to system due to the fact that these functions interface to the breakout board and in most cases, not to the drives themselves.Originally Posted by weedy
I thought about designing a breakout board for resale, but there does not really seem to be a market among hobbiests to support the design, as everyone is interested in give away prices. Also, just generating a schematic or proven wiring diagram can take several hours of work. I am semi-retired, but might draw up some diagrams for the site.
There are several posts addressing these functions under the Gecko thread.

The diagram was drawn from experience after having built numerous systems for clients who needed a wiring diagram. One should not have any reservations about using the diagram as it was not created by me to prove anything; Just to try to help other people who do not have the expertise in electrical equipment or electronics.
Also, it comes with a GUARANTEE. If it doesn't work -- the person doing the wiring screwed up.

what break out board are you using. do you have to install limit switches into this diagram sonwhere.

I am just using a DB-25 board extender with screw terminals. It has a DB-25 connector on one end with circuit traces going to the terminals. Nothing fancy.
The home switches, limit switches, etc. interface to the breakout board and are not directly associated with the Gecko drives.
The hook-up to the switches somewhat depends upon whether you are running Mach 3, TurboCNC, and so forth. The limit switches are wired normally closed in series. This allows one to use only a single input to the breakout board for all the limit switches. Being wired in N.C., the switches are failsafe meaning that any switch that is open, or a broken wire will stop the machine.
I was going to post a link to the Axxus breakout board, but the link appears not to be active any longer. Maybe someone else has a link that they can post for you on breakout board wiring.
