Question Can I use these parts with G540?

Hi

Totally new to CNC and after seeing a CNC plasma table build jumped right in. Therein lies the problem as I started ordering some parts based on the build and after some more thought decided I wanted to go with a G540 instead.

I am building a 4x4 plasma table with 4 axis and purchased the 425oz Keling steppers(http://www.kelinginc.net/KL23H286-20-8B.pdf) and their 36V 9.7A power supply.

I am still reading up on all the documentation and trying to get my head around these new terms and calculations needed

My question is can I/should I stick with what I bought and still use a G540?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated!
Ed

Ed,

The steppers you have will work with the G540 even though the KL23H2100-35-4B would have been a better match.

http://www.kelinginc.net/KL23H2100-35-4B.pdf

Your 36 volt power supply is going to limit the feed rate of the plasma cutter.

The 48 volt model "KL-350-48 48V/7.3A" it is a perfect match for the G540.

It wouldn't hurt to ask John at Keling to exchange your power supply.

Thanks Jeff - I will contact John and see if I can get it changed. I will be running 4 of those 425oz steppers so will the 7.3A be sufficient?

Thanks again
Ed

Ed,

Four of those steppers require 7.46 amps total or 2/3 of the total combined amps.

The short answer is the "KL-350-48 48V/7.3A" power supply should be ok.

kl23h2100-35-4b and g540

Am I correct that using kl23h2100-35-4b motors and the G540 I do not need to use a current set resistor?

You can run the G540 without current set resistors but it will not go into current standby mode without them. If you run the current set resistor input wide open it will output 3.5A at all times instead of dropping down to 70% of set current after one second of no step pulses.

No damage will result aside from hot motors, but if everything is properly heatsinked it should not be a problem. You can read more about heatsinking your G540 by clicking here. If you would like the G540 to go into current reduction mode it is recommended you use the 3.48K resistor from Digi-Key located here.

Thumbs down Homman GC-02 DB-9 bob

I am building a 4 x 4 plasma table using a Gecko 540 and Kelling KL23H2100-35-4B steppers. I ordered from Homann designs about 4 weeks ago and received last Thursday 4 of the GC-02 DB-9 BOB,s. It is the one with a adjustable pot to set the current resistance from 0-3.5 ohms. I can only get one of the BOBs to 3.48 ohms the other 3 will only go to 3.40,3.44,3.46. I have verified the accuracy of my Fluke 87v using a 3.48 ohm axial lead 1% resistor. According to the kelling specs I need to set them to 3.48ohms. How will this affect the steppers to be set at different ohms? If that wont work what will be the downside to setting them to3.40 (the highest common ohm setting).I have e-mailed Peter asking for replacements for the defective Bobs. Hopefuly he will respond post haste! As I did not realize it would take soo long to get parts from Australia Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated!
