I am contimplating on building a cnc wire bender. using the gecko products. I am leaning toward servos for the fact that it will keep position. You really wouldnt know if the stepper skipped a step. Are there any other arguments for/or against using servo vs stepper. I would have to gear it down, most motions will be under 360 degree angular movement. (final movement.) Im looking for strength, torque. speed is not a priority. thanks ahead of time. Eric |

| If you can afford it (or you are going to build your own) I'd go with servo. Steppers are nice and relatively cheap but not knowing if it skips a step can get very annoying. Granted if the machine moves smoothly it really shouldn't be skipping steps. http://torchmate.com/resource_center...s_-_the_facts/ they seem to have a good comparison. |

Where are you at on your project. I am just researching the power requirements as I stated, I have a hand bender bending .1875" wire, takes 14lbs of force on a 10" handle. trying to convert that to torque. What are you thinking for steppers? Power? EZ |

| Well, drawing from my experience with steppers, they really pissed me off one day as I was working on a critical part and they skipped steps. I just about took a hammer to the stepper drives. Use servos. Period. |

I was going to use the gecko 320x. supposedly bullet proof. I have built other cnc machines. and still have my 10 foot cnc foam cutter. http://www.cnczone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16818 this is the cnc router I built a while back. this was fun. I agree as far as understanding what to buy. I dont know alot about other equipment but the gecko products seem to be the best. I am having the same problem trying to find a suitable servo. Anybody have a good source for servos for use with gecko 320x EZ |
