Can i start the chuck and live tooling together?

I am working on a Puma 240m lathe with a fanuc 21-I controll. I want to know if there is a way to start both the live tooling and the main spindle at the same time but I am afraid that it is just an option that we don't have activated.

If i go into mdi and start the live tooling (m33) and then start the main spindle (m03) the machine will stop the live tooling and start the main spindle. Is there something special i need to do programming wise or am i just out of luck?

I know that we have the cylindrical interpolation option on but maybe there is something else that we don't. If that is the case do you know what the price range is to have that turned on. Thanks.

Brad

Cylindrical Interpolation uses live tools and C-axis - when you command M33 (or M34), the C-axis is connected and the live tool spindle starts.

However, I found reference to M206 in a programming manual:

M206 Spindle Rotation Release, Two Spindle Control
Main, Sub or Live Tool Spindle independent speed
command during simultaneous spindle operation.

I HAVE NOT TRIED THIS, SO DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Hi Mr. Coupar: M206 is used with sub and main spindles not live tooling.

Brad: I don't know of anyway to make both the main and live spindles run at the same time. I will be watching to see if anyone else does. Not that I can think of a use for it given what we run, but it is always nice to learn something new.

EDIT: Forgot about High Speed Milling (I think it's called), but that is definitely an option. Not something you will find on the normal lathe.

Don't know if this will help in your particular application, but this is how it's done with a Mori Seiki
M46 (Mill mode off)
M91 S1000 (M91 lets both run at the same time)
S1000 MO3

M05
M90 (Cancels M91)
Both spindles have to turn the same RPM, works well for small drills cutting on center. Someone with some innovation could probably use this feature for some make shift grinding operations.

g-codeguy:

Here's the snippet from the Daewoo Puma programming manual. Maybe I misread it. Have you tried it?

Hmmmm. Will have to look in the main manual. I've only used M206 with the sub. The small instruction manual I keep in my office doesn't mention anything about live tooling when describing the M206 function. I will look into it Monday and get back to you. Thanks for pointing it out.

Checked today and the larger manuals had less to say about the M206 than the one I have in my office. Guess we must have older machines than you do. Obviously you have more up to date information than I do. Thanks again for posting the description.

Not yet. Maybe I'll have time to give it a whirl tomorrow. Today was a typical Monday...and then some.
