What kind of control are you on? I can't tell you about writing it to the ladder but you can make a custom M code if you have Macro programming on your control. The way to find out is go in MDI mode type in #1=5 EOB/Insert cycle start. Look at your variables, if #1=5 then you have macro programming. Do not hit reset before looking at the variables.

If you do have it there are custom macro parameters that you can set to call a specific program using whatever M-code you choose. For example if you set the M49 to call program 9020 everytime that you program a M49 it will call and read program 9020. In program 9020 you can put any information you want to read or write. Like what you wanted.

O9020
#500=#1
M99

I am not sure if that is possible. My experience with ladders is limited. This is probably a question for the ladder guys. I believe that when you set up a M-code in the ladder you are able to see and set system variables inputs and outputs but I am not sure about the custom variables.

Is there a reason that you don't want to use the macro programs? No offense but I hate it when everything is written to the ladder. You have no flexability unless your ladder is through F-rom and you have ladder software. I am currently dealing with a machine that has EVERYTHING written to ladder and it is Eprom so it would have to be reburned in order to change it. I am not sure who did it but it's little things like If you try and call a tool that is already in the spindle the ladder alarms out. Everybody has there own style.

Sorry I was not much help.
