U drill? I'm not familiar with that, unless you're talking about a Ø.368 diameter "U" drill. Also, people in these forums talk about "stainless" in a generic form. When it comes to machining, 'tis better to know the type and condition you are working with.

So please enlighten me on what you mean by "U drill". I'm ignorant here.

I also assumed you meant a 'U' drill (.3680). Even knowing the type of stainless isn't enough information to give an accurate answer. Data from an older Machining Data Handbook 3rd Edition: 430F or 430F Se 49 m/min at .2 feed, 440c and PH series are listed at 15 m/min and about .141 feed. 431, Greek Ascoloy, Nitronic series are even slower.

This is for regular uncoated HSS drills. Coated drills run about 20% faster. These days there are plenty of high performance drills. Carbide drills (both uncoated, and coated in various kinds of coatings) can also run over a wide range...for the same kind of material. Depends on the coating and drill point. Best bet is to get the feeds and speeds from the drill's manufacturer.

EDIT: You probably will have to back off from their recommendations if you value tool life.

Buy me a Beer?

the only way you can get an accurate calculation is to know the tools manufacturer the insert grade and the material you will be cutting , any reputable company will have charts on thier website showing sfm and the chipload /rev

Thanks. I never paid attention to this type of drill as I know the company I work for would never spring for a tool costing that much. Will try to remember for future reference. No need looking like an idiot too often.
