The best thing I can recommend is to figure out which controller you might use on a machine and then find the manual for that controller.
There is a "standard" for G codes, but it seems most do not follow that and as a result the "dialect" may be totally incompatible with the controller you choose!
Most of the manuals that I am familiar with will not only show the code, but will show examples of how to use the code.

Hi Mugen, try "CNC programming Handbook" by Peter Smid, currently on 3rd edition. Look up industrialpress on the internet and you'll find the purchase details there.
In my opinion this book is just what you're looking for to begin with, and then you can use the control manufacturers instructions to learn about any specific (non-fanuc) control features/functions your particular machine has as you go. It covers both milling and turning.
