Robbie,

M00 is program stop. The program pauses at this code and waits for cycle start.

M01 is optional stop. The program pauses at this code only if the optional stop switch is on. This switch is usually located on the operators control panel.

Hope this helps,
Scott

Hi,Rob
some machines dont recognize M0,but do M1.some machines must have optional stop
switch turnned on to work and some turn off coolant & stop.

Another way to say it, is that M0 (program stop) is a forced stop. Spindle, coolant and movement stop and wait for cycle start.

M01 (optional stop) is at the operators discretion to stop. If the optional stop switch is on, then it acts as an M0. If the switch is not on, the control ignores it and continues on.

But as Bear points out, some controls handle things differently.

It can be either,.... even a 'button' and I've seen them on a key switch as well. Depends on your controller and machine make.

Another thought on this subject is the uses of M00 and M01. An M00 would be used in instances where you want to stop the machine on every cycle, say to flip a part from side one to side two or remove chips that build up on a tool each time it does its operation. An M01 is normally programmed after every tool operation. In this way you can option option stop the machine after each op to check dimensions prior to the next tool starting. It's especially useful during setups and troubleshooting.
