You need to post the code so people can see what it is, also where your work zero is located.

I program my own code for straight thread milling and normally put the work zero at the center of the hole. Then the I in the G02/3 is the same as the G01 X move that puts the cutter at the thread radius, or J the same as X. You just have to remember they are opposite signs.

An open mind is a virtue...so long as all the common sense has not leaked out.

Default my reply to need help

the work zero is the center of the hole. everything runs of that work zero. i drill the hole then endmill it out to size. the threadmill comes in the same work zero then cuts the threads way off center. give me a few and i will post the code. i use gibbscam for all my programing and advent for the threadmill. simply cuz i cant figure out how to do it in gibbs. im very new to this software and have never programmed before 4 or 5 months ago. ive been running machines for over 10 years and recently took over a shop. i have no help here and have to learn it all on my own. thus far ive been moderatly succesful until the threadmill has come into play. thanks for the help thus far. program will folow soon.

One thing that looks confusing to me is that you are programming a 5/8-18, you are using radius comp, yet your programmed radius is only .065 seen here...

    N465 Z-0.2144 I-0.0650 J-0.0000 F1.0
If you have a radius value in your offset, but the program is not really expecting one, this can make the results counter-intuative i.e. they look all screwed up.

Look into that and post back here

ok im sorry but im not really understanding what ur saying. it spits out radious comp. on the software automaticaly. do i need to take out the radius comp. cuz i have done this and it doesnt change anything. ive been fighting this for about 2 weeks now.very frustrated. like i said ive never programmed before about 4 months ago. so all this is very new to me and confusing. i used the advent software with the advent thread mill to program that part of it.

If D28 is offset 28, then make sure that there is no radius value in that offset and run one like that, i.e. do not change the program, just make the radius value 0.

Let us know what that does

    Default radius value

the value is 0 in the offset. no offset has been put in it

Take a look at the GibbsCAM file and the G-code file in the attached ZIP file.

Some of the thread milling routines do not use the center of the circle as the center of the arc for cutting. This may be why you think it is cutting off center is because in a way it is.

Here is some info that might help: http://www.vardexusa.com/vardex-pdf/Hand_Book__mm.pdf

ok so if its doing that then how do u correct that and make it cut on the center of the hole like its supposed to?

I was trying to explain that even though the numbers seem that the center of cutting will be off center by 0.015 that the software adjusts the endpoint of the arc to compensate for this. I am trying to find a formula now that explains this better.

I copied the code for tools 7 and 8 and ran it in my simulator and I don't know how you got it to run.

Look at lines N263 to N272.

The machine moves to X0. Y0. on N263 so it is at the work zero.

Then on N267 it moves to X0.1275. (There is a G41 in this line but I don't see a D value so the G41 is not doing anything. But that will not stop the code running.)

Now on N268 a G03 move is supposed to go through an arc of 90 degrees from X0.1275 Y0. to X0. Y0.1275. But in your code both the I and J values are zero.

If the machine is at X0.1275 and the work zero is at the center of the hole the I value has to be -0.1275.

Same idea for lines N269, N270 and N271. The I has to be the opposite of the X value at the start of the arc or the J has to be the opposite of the Y value at the start of the arc.

When I edited these lines like below the code ran okay. The tool 7 the Woodruff cutter did a complete circle of four arcs around the work zero then the thread mill did four passes also around the work zero.

    N267 G41 X0.1275
    N268 G03 G17 X0. Y0.1275 I-0.1275 J0.
    N269 G17 X-0.1275 Y0. I0. J-0.1275
    N270 G17 X0. Y-0.1275 I0.1275 J0.
    N271 G17 X0.1275 Y0. I0. J0.1275
    N272 G40 G01 X0.

I found the code for a 7/16" drill but I didn't find the code for milling the hole out to the size for threadmilling.

An open mind is a virtue...so long as all the common sense has not leaked out.

With CAM output this is common. The tool diameter/radius is incorporated into the code so really tool comp is not needed. But tool comp is called so that it is possible to use wear for adjusting the size. Of course for this the value in the D register has to be zero.

Regarding the comment further up by txcncman; thread milling routines do not use the center of the circle as the center of the arc for cutting.

You do have to use the center of the circle for cutting the actual. However threadmill programs do a tangential entry. That is they move slightly away from center to set tool comp, this is the starting point. Then they make either a 90 degree arc or a 180 degree arc that ends with the tool at the correct radius for the thread. Then they do complete circle(s) with the Z motion for the pitch. (Or they do a series of arcs to make up complete circles depending on the machine.) After doing one or two complete circles to cut the thread they then do an arc that brings them back to the starting point and cancel tool comp back to to the center. This code does that four times.

Because the first arc, which moves from the start point out to the thread radius is not around the center point it is confusing to watch it.

I made a video of the simulator screen which shows tool 7 doing a complete circle then tool 8 doing the offset tangential entry and departure four times.

An open mind is a virtue...so long as all the common sense has not leaked out.

    Default thanks geof

thats what it looks like when i use the advent software. however when i put it on the machie its different on the thread mill and comes out of center. all of u guys have been very helpful but i am still very lost and confused. you guys have so much more knowledge than i do on this stuff so it is very confusing and im about to pull my hair out becuz of it. i appreciate the help very much and dont know how i can repay you guys for this help. i was litterally thrown to the wolfes on this stuff in this shop. if i wanted to keep a job i had to figure this stuff out. ive had a very hard time doin this simply cuz im not a computer guy. i have enough trouble getting my email let alone using this kind of software. im a machinist not a programmer.im trying very hard to get it but its very slow learning and frustrating as all hell. thanks again and i hope i havnt pissed anybody off becuz of my lack of knowledge thanks brian

I am willing to walk you through manual G-coding so that you get what you think you want. But I am willing to bet the G-code you have will work just fine. You confidence is lacking because of your experience level.
