Thumbs down Can’t get forums index!

    It’s me again

I would have liked to have posted this in the thread I already started but I can’t get to it. I got here by going to “today’s posts” and looking for a link here.

I am now on Fire Fox and still having the exact same problem (can’t open the forum index). I downloaded FF and copied my iexplorer setting during installation so it must have something to do with the settings. If anyone could save me a load of time with some advice it would be appreciated.

    The problem:
When I go to http://www.cnczone.com/forums/forum.php I get the page down to the "Featured Ads" bar and that is all.

    John

    John,

I've seen that happen when ads.cnczone.com is sucking wind and churns and churns and never comes back.

In Firefox, click on your VIEW menu option and make sure STATUS BAR is selected. Then the next time the index page doesn't load, look at the status bar at the bottom of your browser and post here what the status bar says. It will probably show that its hung up waiting for the server to reply.

Are you on dial up? We are running on 2 servers so I think the problem is on your computer or your ISP.

UH? the ads are on their own server and will never impact or affect cnczone's forums.

I have the status bar ticked and when I go to the link I get “done” (status bar is very bottom of window?).

    I’m on cable.

I don’t have this problem on my laptop (I/Explorer 7) so know it is not a cnczone problem. It must be something in my settings.

The problem is happening because of my Norton antivirus software, I will investigate.

This forum is gzip compressed. Norton had a bug that created difficulties with GZIP compressed sites. If you haven't already, you might try installing any available patches for Norton.

If that doesn't do it, then post the last line of text from the index page that you actually see on the screen. We can do a "VIEW SOURCE" on the index and get a pretty good idea of what is causing the problem.

That's not true. If you have 4 - 5 Ads per page, for example, then your Ad server is being hit 4 - 5 times for every forum page load. Your forum page won't load if the Ad server is hung up trying to render an Ad. This is what I saw happening last night.

On my forum, during high activity, we're serving 50 ads per second. I have 8 dell servers in a 19" rack on two T-1's in my house.

One thing you might be able to do, if it seems to be a continuing problem, is change the Ad html to reference the IP of the Ad server instead of ads.cnczone.com. That will eliminate a lot of unnecessary DNS lookups and will help a bit with performance.

UH NO, if you are seeing problem late at night on the site it's the back-up(s) increasing server load and causing a slow page load, the site is at it's peak during the day and no problems, but at night all the back-ups are running, that spikes the load as it's backing up the DB(s). I'm on and moitor this site from 8am to 1am M-F and Sat and suday throught the day.

Paul, I just noticed when I have my posting problem, firefox says it's transferring ads.cnczone.com That's where it appears to be hanging. I've also had pages partially load and hang with loading ads.cnczone.com in the status bar. Just wondering if this info will help you track it down.

Same here. Anytime it looks to be taking too long I hit the refresh/reload button and it then loads right up.

I’ve now sorted Norton and everything seems to be working fine now (both Firefox and I/Explorer).

    Thanks for the input
