Help with 4th axis

Hello
I have been trying to load a sample gcode file from a demo version of
CNCWrapper V2. into Flashcut 2. The tool path does not display properly.Instead of text being wrapped around the X axis it displays as just lines in the X-Z plane.
I have check marked the box for A axis in the machine tool configuration menu
I also have Rotary selected for 4th axis type.
The code was created to wrap around the X axis . It seems to me Flashcut does not recognize this and I cant find a option in the Config menu to choose axis of rotation.
I would appreciate any help someone has to offer.

what version of flashcut are you using? i have never done any fourth axis but if you post your g-code file i will try it on mine to see. have you called flashcut they are usually very helpful. they spent a couple of hours on the phone with me back and fourth helping me figure out my usb to serial converter wasn't putting out the correct baudrate. but i will be happy to help

Thanks for responding. This is a sample file from a conversion program called CNCWRAPPER. It opens up and displays correct in a demo version of Mach3.
When I open it in Flascut (version 2.0.3 ) it displays as linier lines in the X-Z plane instead of text wrapped on a radius. I do get some varied results if I play with spacing in the code so I am thinking it might be a posting problem,or I am missing a setting. I say a setting problem because I can create the same results in Mach3 that I get in Flashcut by not checking the
X axis in the "AXIS OF ROTATION" tab. I can not find any option like this in Flaschcut other then in the "MACHINE TOOL" set up screen you can choose A under "USE AXIS" and rotary under "4TH AXIS TYPE".
I never thought to call Flashcut. I have owned there system for so long now that I figured I am not eligable for any free support anymore.

go into the configure menu and look under viewports and set the xyza view port an it should work. i just tried it on 2.1.4 and 3 versions i dont have 2.3 but it should have the same settings. the flashcut guys always seem to find time to help.

Hey Rob. Thanks for taking the time to help.I apreciate it. I took your advise and emailed Flashcut. Ron Worth replyed back the same day. My old version (2.0.3) will not do what I am trying to do. I downloaded Version 3 demo and it worked fine. Looks like I need to get my wallet out and upgrade.

do you have to get a new signal generator. or can they upgrade you with a chip and software. if you wine a little they will knock a few bucks off the upgrade price.

Ron said he will give me 500.00 trade in for my old signal generator. I would like to upgrade but from the specs for the new controller my existing computer is a little lacking and I just am not in a position right now to make that much of a investment.
I have been trying to get Mach3 and my Flashcut driver to play nice but so far no go.
If anybody reading this has any experience doing this I would appreciate any help.

Hi Everyone.
I have been reading these posts with great interest.
I also have a flashcut four axis controller and i run version 2.04
I set it up on a benchtop milling machine.
I have never used the fourth axis though I have had the machine quite a few years ago. health problems put everything on hold for a while.
Now I am just starting to get back into everything and could do with some advice please.
I have got to the stage of adding a stepper motor onto the back of a small woodlathe ( carbatec ) and am hoping to run it as the fourth axis on the bed of the milling machine.
I work only with wood and hope to produce spiral turnings ( barley twist and fluting ) also to decorate and embellish small turnings if possible ( similar to stuff done on those horribly expensive rose engines and holtzappfell lathes of the Victorian time )
I have tried the program cnc wrapper have suffered the same sort of problems as mentioned by densman when testing the files that come with the program, the display is shown as flat rather than cylindrical and the machine doesnt seem to like the code.
I was also wondering if it would be possible to make the flashcut controller like mach3 as I have read lots of posts saying how good that software is.
Any help or advice that anyone can give me will be very much appreciated.

Ah, not sure why you would want to do that... But frankly, version 2.04 is from early 2006 as best I can tell. So many new features and code support additions have been added since then, it would almost be a must to upgrade for anything beyond basic 2.5d or 3d work.

I realize this is a Flashcut forum, but really, if people want to try Mach, it doesn't take much to make an alternative cable to connect to your driver cabinet and give it a whirl. I can tell you that you will find a few things missing that you have come to really appreciate, even though mach has "workarounds". You may never get that far though. By the time your somewhat happy with the operation from fiddling with the plethora of machs vaguely defined configuration checkboxes and dialogs, your first runs will wonder why you left the really well laid out controller Flashcut already is. Granted, 2.04 is going to be a bit antiquated though in 2012.

For anyone reading this old message, I have installed Flashcuts latest version 4 (USB) on an old 1.2G processor, 256m ram Laptop and it is running very well.

If you wanted to try Mach on your currently Flashcut driven machine, it does come down to a simple cable, breakout board or configurable pin db25 adapter.

Essentially, your Flashcut signal generator has a db25 pin connector on the back. Out of this plug (among other things on newer versions), are the signals that tell the motor drivers what to do. The most basic explanation of the magic behind a system like this, is simple. There are pulses that go out of the STEP pins to tell the motors how far and how fast to turn, and there is a plus or minus signal that leaves the DIR pins to tell the motors which direction it should be turning. Each axis has a STEP, DIR and a common ground.

Mach has the same scenario and even uses the same style plug. They just use different pins on that plug.
For example, FC uses pin 9 for axis 1 DIR, and pin 13 for axis 1 STEP. Mach uses a different set of pins, so you have to sit down with a piece of paper and draw a map of what pins going into your driver box need what pins coming out of your parallel port directly on the PC. You do not use the Flashcut box or software at all with new cable or adapter in place. And, you could make it all run with the demo of Mach,,, it will cut 500 lines of code for free they tell me.

If you do it right, you could actually swap back and forth between the two programs just by swapping cables.

If you were to do this, I would hope you would come back and tell us your experiences. If you dont have a more recent version of FC, Mach might impress you with features that are newer than your FC version has. I have swapped two Mach installations to Flashcut. You can not find a more ergonomic, easy to train users, robust control to date. I couldn't imagine not using FC unless I was really down and out and could not afford it.
