Red face Mitsui Seiki VR5A orientation "Feed Hold" 6M

hi fellow engineers

I have a Mitsui Seiki VR5A with Fanuc 6MB control, it also equip with the ATC (Auto Tool Change). The problem is with the orientation on the spindle. This is how it goes , "ATC INI" light on standby, then switched to MDI mode for orientation (M19) , as soon as i press cycle start button , "Feed Hold" light on but the orientation is in the correct position.

I was wondering if any fellow engineers has any information that might help me fix this problem? It would be much appreciated.

The Fanuc 6M depends on the spindle drive to do the spindle orientation. The CNC sends an "orientation command" signal to the spindle drive, then the spindle drive is responsible for rotating the spindle to the orientation postition, then sending an "orientation complete" signal back to the CNC. Ordinarilly, the ladder logic in the PC is written so that the control waits in "feed hold" while orientation is going on.

I would suspect a bad IC reed relay on the spindle drive board. Some Fanuc spindle drives have a separate little board for the orientation, but you may not have a Fanuc spindle drive. Another possibility is that there are some adjustment pots on the board that are out-of-whack and not letting the board detect the orientation sensor correctly.

Hint: If you can find any little IC reed relays on the spindle drive board, or on a little board that's "piggybacked" on top of the spindle drive board, tap it lightly while the Fanuc 6M is waiting for the orientation to be completed. If tapping the relay makes the CNC finish out the M19 command and go to the next block of the program, you've found your culprit. An IC reed relay looks like a normal 14 or 16pin IC, but the center pins are missing. There are usually just 2 pins on each corner of the IC.

hi Dan

Thanks for your reply Dan. I've take some photos on another CNC machine currently using the Fanuc Spindle drive. Is this the IC reed relay as you mention?

And as for my problem machine here, I've checkout the spindle drive (Sanyo Denki Drive) , there are few "piggybacks" board and few adjustment pots but no IC reed relay found on those "piggybacks" as well as on the main spindle drive. Is it adjustment of the pots going to be the only options for my problem here.
Hereby I've upload pictures of Sanyo Denki Spindle Drives.

The IC relay you photographed on the Fanuc drive is the "orientation complete" signal, which is supposed to turn on to confirm that the spindle is oriented.

I don't have any inside knowledge about the Sanyo Denki spindle drive, but I'm sure that is has a relay or some other kind of output to confirm spindle orientation. Sorry, but I can't help you with this drive unit.

Its alright Dan, you have been such a great help, at least i know how the orientation works and roughly which "piggyback" to go searching for. Thanks for your assist and helping me to scale down my problem.
