You can only set names to variables of 500-519 range. The format is as follows:

SETVN500[ABCD]---this will put the word ABCD in the 500 variable
SETVN501[ABCD]---does the same as above except it sets it to variable 501

I believe on the 18 series control as is most you can only use up to 8 characters.

Variables Screen

Thanks stevo1

I use Variables #600 and up to store my Z work offset Values because I need more work offsets than the machine has so I call them from the program like this
(G55 =#601)
#5242=#601
G55
(G56=#602)
#5262=#602
G56
and so on
It would be nice to lable them on the variable screen the same way

II don't think that you can label the variables in the #600 range. As far as I have every seen on the Fanuc controls only variables #500-#519 are able to be labeled as your trying to do.

I don't remember... I also don't have either one of those controls. When I get time later I will check the manual. You could also try and give it a go if you got the control open.

Do I have to execute SETVN500[ABCD] in MDI mode?

You can do it in MDI mode or some people write it into there programs. Makes no difference. I have no preference as I never label them.

0i-model B/C does not accept SETVN5xx[]. Names can be specified for pattern data input by macro-A expressions.
O9501 ;
N1 G65 H92 P066079 Q076084 R032072 I079076 J069032 ; VAR : BOLT HOLE (title)
N2 G65 H93 P500 Q084079 R079076 ; #500 TOOL
...
0i-model D, which is more close to 30/31/32, accept SETVN for 500 to 549, eight characters, and you may also use names in statements acc. to the manual:
[#POS1]=#100+#101
