    backlash

Not sure if this is where this post should be but i am putting it here anyways..

We have an older machine an Exel Mustang VMC with a Fanuc O-M controller. When i clean a round circle well...it just doesnt cut round. I assume it is backlash. Now how does one correct this..is it a controller fix or do the ball screws have so much play they need to be replaced. They dont look overly worn for a 1991 machine..

After reading numerous posts on the subject, it could be:
    Backlash
    Thrust bearings
    Gibs loose
    Excess following error
    Poorly tuned servo motors

    Did I miss anything?
    Good luck, detective!

Forgot one: Check the fit of your tool holders in the splindle taper also.

If you have the old analog style drives (I think you do on the 0M), you may just need to ballance the following error between X and Y. There is a diagnostic that you can use to see the following error. Making a 45 degree X-Y move at a typical cutting feedrate should show the same following error in X as in Y, and the following error should be the same in each direction. Tweaking pots on the servo amplifiers can ballance them. I believe that RV2 is used on the old analog servo boards for this.

    PWE setting
in MDI, under "settings" page, set PWE = 1
then parameter changes under "service" page
When complete, go back to "settings" page, PWE = 0

Some parameter changes require reboot to be effective, so, power off and on again just to make sure.

    still no luck...

    1. set pwe to 1
2.bring up parameter list by pushing dia. soft key
    3.go to parameter...in this case 535
    4.parameter current value is a single 0
5.want to enter a value of 13 so i type 13 and push input
    6. nothing happens so i enter a value of 00000013 and push input
    and again nothing happens
    7. set pwe back to zero ...hit reset and power down...
    8. power up and still no change

I know it is just something simple...missing a step or hitting wrong button somewhere...
