Are you sure that the machine is equipped to do rigid tapping?
I have a VTC150 Burgmaster with Fanuc 6M
i'm trying to do rigid tapping on soft yellow brass, i'm hoping someone can help me set the parameter to orient spindle before each cycle
any and all help needed
we got this machine free from craigslist (wow, right) and we've managed to figure out most of it to this point, luckily i'm a computer nerd and my father in law is a machinist and our machine shop had room!
thank you in advance
attached are pictures of a very similar VTC150 and then the machine that WAS our newest machine until this...

Hi,
There are several ways for tapping, try one of these lines in your program.
Maybe you need other codes for G94/G95 (MM/MIN and MM/REV)
These nc-code works for most Fanuc controls.
Be aware that when you use G95 (MM/REV) you have to switch back to G94(MM/MIN)
after tapping, otherwise machine stays in that mode.
Tap: M10 X 1.5
G95(MM/REV)
M29 S500 ( RIGID TAP )
G84 Z-15. R2. F1.5
G94(MM/MIN)
G80
or
M29 S500 ( RIGID TAP - FEED/MIN )
G84 Z-15. R2. F750 (500X1.5=750MM/MIN)
G80

I don't recall any Fanuc 6M control being able to do rigid tapping. You will need to get a tension/compression tap holder and do it the "old fashioned" way. G84 is the tapping cycle.

Hi Chris,
Some say Rigid Tapping is available since the Fanuc 6M Model B-2.
I have a cnc-lathe with live tools and for tapping I use a FAHRION Collet with ER-conus.
It fits in an ER-collet toolholder, they are sold for ER11 to ER40 collets.
I payed ± $115,- (€100,-) for the Fahrion 4285E CET25-GB collet and it works great.

this machine is DOING the tap cycle, i just would like to have it orient the spindle before each cycle, i recall seeing something about it somewhere but i've been all over the internet looking
i can't find a list of parameters at all, i know this machine has them, there's a button that pulls up a list of them...
we are a small family shop, 3 people, we can't afford a professional to come in and look, this is the ONLY forum i've gotten a response in
I just need to find out which parameter, then how to set it
Hi,
On almost every Fanuc control Rigid Tapping is an option set via Option Parameters.
According the Internet the "normal" parameter-list is in the back of the Operators Manual, there's no Parameter Manual.
The Option Parameter list ( paper-version ) is normally stored in the electrical cabinet on the back of the machine.
First, do you have all the manuals and parameter lists...?
What happens when you execute M29.
Why do you want to orient the spindle.

I have NEVER heard of a 6 rigid tapping. I have owned zeros that wouldnt. But I am wrong everyday.
BTW Are you gaging those threads?
I'm with you on the this! The 6 series of controls were analog drive controls. The only time I have seen rigid tapping is on controls, drives, and servos that are AC digital, never on DC analog. But hey, I'm old, been doing this for 40 years, WTF do I know?
Chris D
Afaik, the FS6 did not have that option. DC drives are ok for that, but you need an encoder/resolver on the spindle.
Hi memoryman,
I found a thread that says:
Most of the 6Ms didn't have the ability to do rigid tapping, but a few of the latest 6MB-2 controls did.
It's from cnczone website but the link doesn't work proper so I added an image.
Our first Fanuc was a 1980 Takisawa with 5M , strange thing to program the speed, it was multiplied X30, a S50 was equal to S1500 rpm.
We skipped the 6-series so I don,t know about the [ rigid tap ] option.

Thanks for that.
I have a complete(?) option list for the FS6 control, and that option is not listed.
man this stuff is so complicated....
i've got some more research to do and i'll post another update and round of questions
