    Fanuc 31i with Z and W axis

    Hey guys,
We recently upgraded our Gantry mill from an old Allen Bradley Control to a Fanuc 31i Control. Only, we have a "W" and a "Z" axis. Most of our parts, we postion, then lock the "W" axis, then let the "Z" do the moves, however, some of our bigger parts requires the "W" axis to do the moving instead of the "Z". On the old control, this was handles by a "G" code telling the machine to switch from "Z" to "W". I cannot find anything like that on this Fanuc control. Can someone please help!
    Thanks,
    Todd

there are standard parameters which allow you to name any axis with a letter in the range X Y Z A B C U V W. on the 31 series this parameter is 1020 but also check the other axis parameters (1000 to 1031)
when you say lock do you mean clamping a rotary axis? there is usually an M code for that for A B C axis.
you should probably start by naming the axes to a more standard layout XYZ for sliding movement and ABC for rotary movement. an M code to clamp an axis is usually specific to the machine and would likely be part of the PMC/Ladder and done by the machine tool builder (MTB)

W-axis would be configured as a parallel axis to Z and is treated as a normal axis, so you don't need a switching command, just program W as you would with Z.
