    Connecting a Faunc11m to a laptop with 25pin centronics

Hi, I am new to this so sorry if it's been done before or in the wrong place. Not really sure what to look for!

I have been tasked with trying to talk to a CNC machine with a Faunc11m controller. All Dutch to me! I have an oldish Windows XP Toshiba laptop with a 25pin centronics port, the people who's machine it is have emailed me some software called ONEDNC which I have installed on the laptop.

Any pointers? Should I use a standard 25pin - 25pin cable ? I have a 25pin - 9 pin converter if that is easier. Baud rates and other settings? Any things I really should not do?

Any information would be gratefully received.

    Many thanks.

If you want to send me a email add via P.M. I can send you the Fanuc RS232 manual for the 10/11.
I generally use a 3 wire cable with the Handshake jumpered out on each end.
The pdf is for the 0m so ignore the para, but the wiring applies.

I would not plug a cable between the "centronics" port and the machine. Centronics ports are usually only on printers, not pc's.

If it's a DB-25 on a laptop, it's probably a parallel printer port. You need a serial port, which are usually DB-9 female. Does your laptop have one of these?

Hi Al_The_Man, many thanks, I shall send you a PM.

dcoupar, yes, it appears it is just parallel port. It's been a long time since I used such technology and for some reason forgot that it's called a parallel port for a reason!! I have a different laptop with a 9 pin serial port so will use that one instead!

    Any more info appreciated

    Me again!

Al, is there any advantage of using one cable over the other? Can I just use an off the shelf null modem cable? will it matter about the handshaking lines?

    Thanks again for your help.

the handshaking is important. please do a search for 'RS232' or 'transfer cable'. there is a lot of info on cables and hook-ups here. No point re-inventing the wheel. It's all here just read it.
    start here maybe....

Thanks for that, I asked because Al_the_man said he uses a standard cable with the handshake lines jumpered.

I shall have a good read.

a standard cable may work but essentially you need to make a CNC transfer cable.
A cable is a cable. it's just wire and connectors. the important part is where the wires go. so you can use any cable and just hack it up and re-wire it to suit your application. the handshaking part is the 'jumpers'. the 2nd link I posted gives the wiring for a 9 pin to 25 pin cable and is a good place to start when making the cable.

Fanuc uses software handshake for control, the H.W. handshake is required but not used for control so I have always used the jumpered 3 wire version with no detrimental effects.
    Manual sent.
