    rs232.. 25pin to DB9?

Hi to all... Okay.. I may sound like an idiot.. but I have been transferring programs VIA CF from my pc to Fanuc Oi-MB for years now.. All of a sudden, it does not work. I have tried new card, new adapter, no avail. I would love to transfer from my laptop, or office desktop. My problem is.. there are both RJ45, and RS232 ports on the machine.. Is there a parameter to change that designates which you use? And this... RS232 25 pin on machine, only 9 pin accessories in stores.. what am I missing here? no 25 to 9 pin adapter, the serial to USB adapters don't have the same plug, I am clueless as to where to go from here.. Ideally.. I would love to just plug an Ethernet cable in my laptop and transfer .txt files to and punch from.. but it doesn't even acknowledge the two are connected.. I am a machinist, not a computer tech! Any Help would be greatly appreciated!

Did your RS-232 cable fail? That would be my first check.

I have yet to use an RJ-45 connection. I think the idea is this allows you to put the machine visible as a hard drive on a network. I am sure there are parameters to handle this. Check your machine manuals. Once on the network with proper permissions set, you would be able to copy files to or delete files from the machine from a networked computer directly. No running back and forth with READ and PUNCH commands.

Forget ethernet. Use the RS232 port.
There are parameters to set the RS232 port to be active.
There are 100's of posts here about RS232 communication issues.
Check this thread for more info....

and many many others. Do a search and read......

You need to make a custom transfer cable or buy a null modem cable.
    Check this....

for parameter settings and cable pinouts

You don't need to change any parameters except the IO Device.
The machine will have the communication parameters set to something.
You only need to look at your parameters, record them and then set the PC transfer software to those same settings (Baud/Parity/Stop Bits) and it should work when you use a correct cable.

    spitfire,
Null Modem is a generic term, with the name referring to its origin as a cable that bypasses the Computer to Modem (DTE to DCE) connection and directly connect two Computers (DTE to DTE). Accordingly, there are a few versions of so called Null Modem cables, the pin-out of which will determine the type of Handshaking used. Accordingly, I'd suggest that you make the cable. A cable for Xon Xoff (Software) handshaking is quick and simple to make, and you will know for sure what the pin out actually is. Although it does no harm, its not necessary to bridge the Signal Pins, 7+8 and 6+1+4 (DB9 connector), at the PC end, but complete the bridging at the Control end. Then just connect Signal Ground (7), plus the TD(2) and RD(3) (DB25 connector) lines from the Control end, to SG(5), RD(2) and TD(3) (DB9 Connector) at the PC end respectively.

    Regards,

    Bill
