Having difficulty tapping OI-MC on Viper mill.

Here is a sample of our program:

M3S300;
G84 X0 Y0 R.1 Z-1. F23.;

Believe program should be written this way:

G94
M29S300
G84G99Z-1.R.1F23.

We have to use a thick tapping paste. I've always been able to use coolant from the mill.

Will need to edit these variables I believe as well:

5200 from 1 to 0 to allow M code for tapping.
5210 from 1 to 0 to activate allow M29 code.
5212 is set to 29. specifies a rigid tapping mode.

Should I really need to have to add tapping paste?
Using a floating head. Can i still use this for rigid tapping?
Also noticed that tap doesn't really come to a stop.
Tap reverses almost instantly.
Opinions? Right track?

Correct for the parameters. The alternative is to have the parameters set so that Rigid tapping is invoked via G84. Of course, this limits you to riigid tapping only.

You can still use the floating tap holder with rigid tapping, but obviously using a rigid holder will be less expensive, particularly if a few different size threads are being tapped in the one propgram.

Tap reversing almost instanly is correct.

With regards to tapping paste, it will depend on the material being tapped. There are a few ways around applying tapping compound. A very simple method is to secure a small container of compound out of hams way on the machine table or fixture. When the tapping tool is called to tap the holes, its programmed to dip the tap into the compound. Another method is to place a small push type grease gun filled with tapping compouund, into a holder and set it with a tool lenght offset. Prior to carrying out the tapping operation, the grease gun tool is called and tapping compound is applied to all holes to be tapped.

Regards,

Bill

You did not give enough information. What material? What size and type of tap? What starting hole size? What RPM? What is the real difficulty? Lack of knowledge? Lack of experience?
