Fanuc 18-M

I have used Mach2/3 on a knee mill for many years, now just got a VMC with a Fanuc 18-M, and am really lost. I mean I cant even get offsets taught let alone get a program to run....wow. Where can I find operation manuals online? Is there a PDF available that will take me step by step to get started with this control?

Thanks for any help!
Scott

There are a number of different FS18-M controls, so the first step is to determine the exact model; the manufactured date may be helpful. The control data sheet has all needed info (often put in the electrical cabinet).
You can also press the SYSTEM softkey and tell me what the SYSTEM CONFIG SLOT 00 info is.

The newer machines have geometry offsets (G54, G55, G56 etc) instead of the G92 XYZ etc. You will also have 2 offset pages, one for length (H) and one for diameter (D). Tool length is set by touching the tool onto a fixed position and then pressing MEASURE with the cursor on that tool number. There are other small changes but as far as the basics are concerned Fanuc is Fanuc is Fanuc regardless of series. You can apply 98% of 16M or 0M to 18M.

Anyway I sent you a link to a new series manual. Check your PM's

That is a 18-c control. Manuals are available in PDF format.

I don't have the manuals for the Series 18 Model C.. only the 16/18/21 manuals for the B model. I have only one or two manuals for the A model.

The 16, 18 and 21 are similar. There are several different CPU's. They are listed by board number in the maintenance manual (and a few others).

I just finished my 16M build (as far as the control side goes) so I can help you a bit, while I'm not an expert on it yet.

The exact control you have includes all the options, boards, modules, Servo Amplifiers (drives), servos, etc.you should post the entire system configuration. Each board and module has ID in hex format. On the yellow case there is a ID sticker which should have a number like something like the format of A02B-0236-Bxxx.`Some of these labels have a build date something like 1999-01 and maybe a serial and/or barcode.

As memoryman suggested.. press the [SYSTEM] softkey and go into the system menu.

These are mostly standalone versions but some of these CPU's were mounted on the back of the LCD/MDI unless you had a model with the 14" CRT/MDI. You could get various base confugurations with up to 8 slots

Memex Automation has a "Identification" PDF which can help a user ID the CPU and memory.

Most of the boards and modules have their own unique ID. Get out a piece of notepaper and scratch down your entire system configuration.. all the board part numbers.. module part numbers and their ID's, etc. It will help if you go to upgrade, or if you talk to FANUC. I keep this list handy in my maintenance manual.

Don't forget to make backups of parameters, etc.

eBay is a pretty good place to get spare parts and upgrades if you need some. They are generally not too extremely expensive on eBay unless you're dealing with an i Series, like an 18iMA, OiMC, etc, or its a really old system.

You can get manuals from FANUC generally not too expensive either. If you really need some I am sure I can dig one up somewhere for you.
