Installing tool and work probes on VMC

If a VMC with, say, 0i MC control has been purchased without any probes, and probes are desired to be separately purchased and installed on it, what is needed to be done?
Is Ladder modification also needed, or is it just a simple hardware connection between control and skip-signal receptor?
Does the probe supplier (say, Renishaw) do complete installation on the machine (irrespective of machine/control model), or is it users' responsibility?
If yes, is the cost of integration included in the cost of probes?
Is G31 a standard or optional code?
