Alarm 170

I am trying to edit an existing program in a Fanuc Robocut(alpha iB series)
every time i try and change it i get "Alarm 170 message"
i know there is some way of locking the program by changing parameters but i cannot find out how its done.
Any help of feedback would be appreciated

What is the control? I don't find 170 in the 16i or 16 manuals. What is the number of the program you are trying to enter?

Editing Program

The easiest is to check and see if the key in the face of the control is turned to the locked mode. If the key is in the locked mode, you can't edit any program. If that is not the problem, look in your maintenance manual and you have to turn on parameter write enable. In my older Fanuc controls, it was in the Chapter screen, General screen, Handy screen, hit page up, and you would come to 8000 setting. Turn on bit 1 and it would go into an alarm state which said paramater write enabled. Then you have to look in the book and find out which paramater and bit you have to turn on to be able to edit
the 8000, and 9000 program numbers. I think it is in the front of the book of parameters in the 100 to 120 level. Read what the book says, and there will
be an note that says "enable edit 8000 program numbers" turn on bit 5, or something like that. Change the parameter to what the book says, then edit
the program. After you get done with your editing, go back and turn the 8000parameter write enable off, hit reset, and you should be good to go. This info is from a M15 Fanuc control that I owned, so the I80 might be a little bit different. I don't know. If in doubt, call your service man, and he should be able to help you over the phone. Don't have a service call over this problem. Let me know if this helped. I had Fanuc 0, 6MB, 11M, 15M, I80, Yasnac, Okuma OSP 5000MG, and Centroid controls that I did almost all my control problems over the phone.

I believe parameter 3202 bit 0 = 1 inhibits editing of 8000-8999 programs. If you set this to 0 it should allow you to edit those programs. 3202 bit 4 does the same thing for 9000-9999 programs.

You need to be in MDI, go to the Setting screen and set Parameter Write=1. You'll get an alarm 100, but you can ignore it. Then go to System, key in 3202 and press [NO SRH]. Cursor over to the far right bit (0) and change it to 0. Then go back to Setting and set Parameter Write = 0. RESET and the alarm should clear. Be careful, though because now those programs can be deleted, as well as edited.
