Hi humak16
Why are you asking? If you are thinking about adding items to use on these ports there are a lot of things other than the protocol that have to be sorted out. The RS232 is old and has gone through several major revisions as the chip sets and protocol demands have advanced. This is a link to a paper that sets out some of the main considerations:- http://www.arcelect.com/rs232.htm Note that the type of connector and the pinout alters as well as the protocol which can be one or two way.
Do a web search for the Wiki entry on both for a detailed explanation of the standard - such as it is - on the protocol but note the voltage deffinitions for logic zero and logic one and the associated source / sink capabilities of the lines if you wish to impliment a serial interface using these standards as Fanuc may have further customised the interface. This is a reasonable action on any manufacturer's part where the interface connector is expected to couple to another item made by that manufacturer or a business associated in some way.
As a general observation the USB and RJ45 ethernet interfaces are better specified and aid manufacturer independance or RS432 if you must! In the mean time wait for a an expert on your version of Fanuc to chip in with
Regards - Pat
