Serial / ethernet adapter - fagor 8055m

We just bought a used Motion Master 5 axis CNC. It is an older machine and has no ethernet adapter.

We have 9 other 5 axis cnc's, 5 DMS with 8055's and 4 other Motion Masters upgraded to fagor 8055's. All are networked except 1 small machine that only runs a cpl parts on it. The owner of the company bought this machine at an auction and at the moment doesnt want to spring for the price of a new CPU to get the ethernet capapbilities.

My plant manager bought a serial to ethernet converter so we could try and get this machine on the network. So far we are having no luck getting the pc to see the machine. Keep getting the old port opening error.

We haven't used serial communcation in many years so we have no spare plugs or anything left laying around. We do have an assortment of parts to build a rs232 cable but I have never had any dealings with making up a serial cable or how to read the diagrams to make one up. CAT 5 I can do in my sleep :> But serial will not solve my problem.

I need some way, if there is one, to get this machine on the network. I know in the long run we will have to purchase a new CPU, but until then, got to make the owner happy and try any and all options first.

Just wondering if anyone has ever tried one of these adapters and if so do you have any tips to get this thing to see our CNC machine.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I have not heard of any success with those kind of adapters.

Your best bet will most likely be to resort back to serial communication.
Fagor has a pinout diagram listed on their website.
http://www.fagor-automation.com/Tech...040_RS-232.pdf
All you need to make one of these is some wires, and some 9 pin sub d connectors (female). Very easy to solder up.

They show the connection and also some information on setting up the parameters for serial communication.

If this is a compact unit (single unit with all connections and monitor in one unit) it is easy to add ethernet. Fagor sells a network card that can be added on.

If it is a modular unit (power supply chasis with slot style modules), it may not be as easy as you will most likely need to upgrade the cpu to obtain a ethernet port.

Maybe check with fagor to see if they know anything about this. It cant hurt to check with the experts.
