No tool presetter

when i set up i am used to setting all my fixture offsets (xy and z) to match the program. and then measure the length of the tool(t1 for example) with a tool presetter and placing that value in the t1 tool length offset spot. my presetter is acting up and i wanted to know is there any other way to measure tool lengths accurately.

Measure from the base of the tool holder to the tip of drill or the tip of the insert radius (in the toolholder), with calipers. Put the cnc in step mode when running the first part, then jog thru the program very slow, check your first part, then make your cnc offsets.

If your running a boring bar or drill, double check the depth of cut, before the 2nd op. rolls around.

If the old tool is only worn out (not crashed), just copy that length over to the new tool, when setting with calipers.

use a tooling ball

with a tooling ball in a tool holder (this is tool # 0 )

use the ball to set your part "Z" zero

then use the ball tool set your tools

1) from a flat surface place a 1" gage block

2) lower the ball in "Z" ,lower then then block

3) slide the gage block under the ball slowly raising the ball in "Z" untill you can just slide the 1" block under the ball

4) write down the "Z" value

5) repeat steps 1 -> 4 for each tool

6) subtract the ball value from the tool value = tool offset

if the tool is longer then the ball the tool offset will be (+)
if the tool is shorter then the ball the tool offset will be (-)

you can also use Starrett 640JZ 52705 with a flat top
