6030 X-axis

I have a 94 VMC 6030 and the x axis is acting funny. I checked the gibs and they seem to be set right. The x axis seem to be rumble in when it rapids just in the – direction. Some times you can even see it on the part when it’s milling. Its like it stops then jumps .01 to .02 and keeps doing that. When it gets that bad I shut it off and restart and it helps. Enough so you can’t see it on the part but if you put your hand on the table and jog it as fast as it can go you can feel it slightly. What I would like to know is it the motor is it the thrust bearings or something else that I need to check.

Thanks
Jay

I have seen this happen when the resolver goes bad. The axis does funny things. The bearing in the resolver go bad and the positioning is irratic. This was on a 4020 machine but seems close enough.

Jay--
Along with the others things mentioned above, check the lubrication and make sure you not getting any sticktion (sp). Also try running the motor out in the air not connected to the ballscrew. This will indicate if the issue is with the motor or the mechanical system.

I thought that it was oil at first two I had the way covers off and put oil on everything and it didn’t seem to change. I just ran it with out air and it didn’t seem to change The bearing in the resolver is that the motor? Is that a big job or not really. Do you know where I can order the bearing at?

Thanks
Jay

It is not really a big job, although you need to replace the resolver and not just the bearings. They are a special made unit. If you remove the cover on the end of the motor the resolver the small motor looking thing at the end. There is a coupling holding it to the end of the motor and I believe thre flat head screws that hold it down. once removed you can turn the shaft, it should feel very smooth. any tight or rough feeling spots it is suspect and should be replaced. Once this is removed you will have to reset your cold start position.

Jay I have the exact same problem with my 40x20 I checked everything even oiled the ball screw manually and ran it a few times just to make sure. no changes.
in the x- is were mine is loudest and very slight in the x+
I have a new motor on the x axis and thought that would fix it. Mine was running like that since I got it (completely rebuilt supposibly) and its only in rapids at 100%

at first I thought it could have been the axis motor coupling, not being aligned correctly but after replaceing the axis motor it made no difference.

I am thinking but not sure maybe a thrust washer? or something on the opposite side of the axis motor is slopping around or not true. either that or its the drive board, I havent swappped the drives yet but its on my list of things to do , to find the problem.
if its not electrical then it may even be were the ball nut mounts to the table, maybe it came loose?

I have no problems with positioning or tolorances just the noise/vibration sounding.

I have heard this same noise in the past rebuilding acrolocs and its generally due to the ball screw not being centered properly opposite of the axis motor However yours is 60" and if you have the slightest bind in the ball screw(off center) even on the axis motor side you will hear it.)

Jay Neal meant to disconnect the motor Not turn the Air OFF and run the motor.
basically run the motot in a free state not connected to the ball screw

You probably need the motor rebuild or you need to get a new motor
