We have a 2003 6030 with the 32 mp control and Nikken 5 axis rotaries. Recently the B axis has been howling. It does this when sitting idle and stops when you lock it. Do you guys think this is an encoder issue or could it simply be a pot adjustment on the drive card? Is there a certain procedure for tuning the drive? Thanks in advance |

| Is this an AC or DC motor on 4th & 5th?

| Can you describe the noise in a little more detail? It could be machanical or eletronic. The noise stop when put the brake on possibly because the axis inhibit circuit removes power from the motor. You could try unmounting the motor from the unit and run it in the air. If you have no noise now then perhaps there is a mechanical answer either in the unit or internal to the motor. I also may be simply the servo loop gain needs to be touched up a bit. Neal |

| It sounds electronic in nature. It is high pitched. When the machine is running in full 5 axis, (cylinder heads),there is no noise. The port surface finishes all look good and the alignments are dead on. The issue arises just when the machine is idle. I was thinking maybe the encoder giving issues or as you stated, a loop gain adjustment. Unfortunately at this time I do not have the luxury of removing the motor to test. The issue did start suddenly with no warning. The B-axis can be jogged and returned to zero and the noise will go away. That is what had me looking at the encoder being on the border or in between counts. Thanks for the reply Neal. |

| Identify B axis amplifier and turn the "comp pot" clockwise and see the noise increase or go away. so try to set the comp pot accordingly, if it doesn't work let me know.

| Unforunately, I am not a BMW enthusiast. IESS stands for my company's name: Industrial Electronic Sales & Service, LLC. Did you happen to resolve this issue?

| The machine has not gave a lick of trouble since I posted this. Thanks for the help. iess525, do you remanufacture or repair drive cards, etc. Considering the cost of these items from Fadal, it would be good to have a source to repair these items. |
