X axis motor (fixing magnets)

Figured I would throw this up just incase someone has a problem.

Yesterday I heard a clink in the x axis motor( like someone hitting it the cover with a hammer). so I am thinking the worse, ball screw motor. I pull the covers off to get a better listen. I have heard the noise before in other machines just couldnt place it.
Called fadal support and spoke with Paul.
Paul had me swap drive controller cards to make sure that a drive wasnt going bad they make a noice like I explained to paul sometimes.
that all went well still had the noise.
I happened to turn the ball screw when the power was off and heard the noise. Called Paul back and told him, about the time I held the phone down to the motor it dawned on me what it could be a magnet, when I talked to paul again he said sounds like a magent came loose. glue to back on with epoxy and you will be good to go. I have doen this before a long time ago. becuase I was going to have a machine down for 24 hours I almost bought a new motor but decided what the heck I will fix this one.
Paul walked me through it and made sure I knew how to take things apart.
BTW I have worked on many machines and the fadals are about the easiest I have seen for axis motors.

pulled the wireing, motor and popped it on the bench.
left tach and everything still on.
pulled the coupling off the motor shaft and then the 4 long bolts on the bottom of the motor. had someone hold the base of the motor and pulled the armature out in one piece. along came the magent slide up the case a tad, so that confirmed it.

Now just for those who dont know make sure you pull the motor apart slowly cause if you turn the magnet around you wil throw off the polarity might as well scrap the motor and buy a new one.

I marked the motor and also doulbe checks the way the glue was on the motor of the case to make sure it was correct it was.

clean the motor case very good then dry all the oils off, clean the magnet very good then dry all the oils off.
mix your epoxy a high temp 2 part is best. I know guys that use devcon 2 ton epoxy from wall mart turcite glue works as well. what ever you use make sure its good **** and you clean the parts extreamly well.

I brought the case over to a buddy of mine I havent seen in a long time who does motors( 7 years to be exact) we mixed the epoxy up and spread it on the back of the magnet. got a hardwood dowel and wedged it between the opposite side magnet to hold presure on it in the case till the glue sets.

make sure you make spacers in between the magnets so you can hold it even , if its off it may effect the motor. if you think its close its good enough.

let it set over night for curing pull the stick and your done. you can use washers on the good side to adjust the pressure. DONT use metal USE wood and dont get it to tight so it warps the case.

when you put the motor back on, more than likely your alignment will be off when you do the "SC" so keep the machine on goto that axis motor take the back cover off and there are three screws on the encoder.

first thing you do is aling the table position for a cold start, type in "CS"
if it alings correctly your fine , if it doesnt goto the axis motor and loosen the three screws that hold the encoder just a tad. then turn the encoder till the lines aling on the axis you are working on. tighten the screws power off power on do a "CS" you should be good to go.
button everything up reset your "E" numbers as the axis you fixed will change.

put it all back together and its quieter and runs smoother than before. gotta love it saved me some big bucks on a new motor.

Thanks Again Paul ( you can tell him for me again Neil ) you guys have always been helpful.
