tool holder stuck in spindle

i just had a tool holder stick in the spindle. all the rest of the tool holders release with not problems so i'm guessing its the holder. i got it out by prying on it, and i can load and unload by hand, any idea what happened here? is it just the pull stud? its a 92 fadal 3016 cat 40 taper.

Geof will become famous soon enough

Could be just that you had been doing heavy cut which I have found sometimes seems to jam the tool tighter in the taper. Or if the spindle warms up during operation and then cools down it shrinks down a little bit on the taper. Dried coolant residue on the taper can also make them stick.

I have found some holders do it more than others and figure there are minuscule differences in the taper so one fits more perfectly that the other in the spindle.

Clean everything well, methyl hydrate removes coolant residue easily, and lubricate with a light film of oil.

I agree with Geof lots of heavy roughing can get them in there pretty tight as the vibration and force tightens the taper. I don't think I've ever had to pry one out though. Make sure to check your air pressure going into the machine and your regulator setting. The spec should be on a plate right above the air "in" assy.Could also be that the "O" ring on the drawbar plate is leaking past a bit. But due to the wonderful design of that assy the plate usually just breaks!

Yup, heavy cuts/vibration from long tools. You will see the fretting on the taper when you get it out.

I never pry them though - I tap the side of the holder with a mallet while it is trying to eject.
I find that some dry lube Teflon spray on the tapers of the tool that will be cutting heavy really helps - and always use the shortest possible holder/cutter combo

when i say pry, the holder just popped out when i was holding the tool in/out button. this is a short 3/4 end mill holder. so the tooling length is about as short as i can go. i will try the teflon spray and see if that helps any. thanks guys.

I used to think that a little wd 40 or lube would help and it seemed to help but in reality there were some that just stuck and others that wouldnt. I think you can have issues with the taper being too long oor the pull stud with wrong geometry. We have alot of Command tooling that really wasnt cheap but held up over the years. Some of the Parlec didnt, the ebay cheapies didnt (you can scratch those with a file). If your constantly getting sticky tools you may have to replace the air valve..I think its a two way Maki valve. These are prone to any kind of foreign media in the air lines and will get sticky. You can tell if its sticky when the air valve itself is hot. The air valve getting hot is usually the first one (the speed changing air valve). What the older Fadals could really benefit from would be a air valve that wouldnt get sticky or leak.
