troubleshoot glentek 4th axis board

Hello,

I have my '97 VMC 15 running a test program for XYZ, but I get an axis/servo fault if I connect the 4th axis. It's a fadal 4th (Glentek DC). We can get the 4th servo to run continuously if we disconnect some of the Feedback wires, so I believe the servo motor to be good. Also, before I bought the 4th (at an auction) we tested it on the 4020 that it was connected to. It worked fine there. So the new variables are: My VMC 15 (came out of the same shop) and it's control board and servo amp.

The red light on the servo amp does work and will go from red to green. There was another servo amp with the machine that was marked as "good" but the LED doesn't even light on that board. The small fuse at the bottom checked OK but I swapped it with the fuse from the original board, and still no LED.

So, I feel like I have (1) board with some hope, and another board that I don't know where to start.

Anybody in the Wisconsin area know how to verify these amps with a DMM?

Can I use one of the other other axis amps or control boards for a test? The control board probably requires a Jumper Swap? Will I be able to start the machine with a bad board/amp in one of the other positions?

MC, have you found a 4th yet?

Thanks,

Tim

Hey Tim!! Are you sure that machine was using a 4th axis at one point? Can you confirm the M-code card? We still havent gotten our 4th axis yet and its driving me nuts. We are moving in a new Mazak next week (turning center) and I have been scratching my head at that bill so its been keeping my mind off the 4th for now.

I can't say FOR SURE! I know the machine was shipped with the 4th option. The shop had (2) 4020's with 4ths on them at the auction. As you know, my machine had a bad Z motor, so it did not physically have the rotary table mounted on it. I suppose they only had 2 4th's in the shop, so use them on the machines that run. The programmer that has been helping me, verified that the control is configured to run a 4th, and he reminded me that we tested the 4th on the 4020 at the auction, so the table is not likely the problem. I need to do some detailed troubleshooting this weekend and see where I get. I've been using free time to work on my garage heating system. Without that, no need to run the machine! What Mazak are you getting? My friend (programmer) is our best programmer, on any machine. He get's all the tough stuff, get's it done, and moves on to the next project.

I hope to get up your way in the next few months, and I hope he's along.

I'll post what I find about my 4th on SUnday or Monday.

Tim

Tim yes stop by and I will break out the scottish ales. For a 4th on a Fadal here is waht you need to run it. I doubt it was running on that machine bfore hand (BUMMER) (copied from a email with a Fadal parts source)

1. DC Amp Chassis: AMP-0030 = $537

2. DC Amp Card: AMP-0001A = $795

3. 1010-5 Controller Card: 1010-5 = $695

4. 4th Axis EPROMS: ELE-0030 = $1250

5. 4th Axis Inhibit Circuit: WIR-0578 = $352 (this turns off the servo motor when the 4th axis brake is applied. You must have this or chance burning up your 4th axis servo motor.

6. Relay for air brake: ELE-0070 = $17

7. Air solenoid for air brake: VLV-0053 = $143

8. Misc Tubing and fittings for air brake: $50
