    4020 memory

Can anyone tell me how to free up the memory on our Fadal 4020VMC? When I upload a program, it only gets as far as a couple hundred lines and stops. I have deleted all the programs in the library and still have only 8% memory available.

    Use the RI command.
Answer no to the 1st 2 questions (I do anyway) and yes to the 3rd. This will give you 97 - 98%

Sounds like you have -3 or -4 control.
Even with the mem cleared you will be limited to 4500 lines.
After I expanded my mem I got up to about 30000 lines.

My machine is a 94, how old is yours?
I doubt very much a USB upgrade can be had for mine.

The USB ubgrade is really using the serial port.

It is essentially a tiny tiny tiny computer hanging on the serial port that recognizes commands typed from the CNC88 and essentially DNCs data from a thumb drive plugged into the unit.

Pretty simple, looks sharp and effective, never tried one though.

I'm not sure how this is any better than DNC'ing from an attached PC - well it probably allows a much higher baud rate and doesn't take up nearly as much space.

thanks for the replies. I ended up running the program DNC without any problems. Wish I had known it was that simple. Im going to try RI in a few and see if I can free it up. Thanks again

On a 88hs I have found you must power down the machine and cold start again to clear up memory after deleting programs. You can also get extended memory for about $400...its worth it!

I have never found the need for doing CS when using RI command.
I definitely agree that the upgrade to 440? kb is well worth the money.

well to tell the story we had lightning strike near our bldg. the surge came through a pc hooked to the rs232 port which fried the comm. board . the add on usb is not hooked to outside power source when the mill is powered down it is safe from surges the machine is a 96 model it is 88hs control probably the same as yours. i just ordered another unit for a vmc 15xt . last week installed one on a burny 3 plasma cutter it sure is nice to have files on the thumb drives super easy to install on the mill takes maybe 20 minutes and you are ready to load to part files or dnc just change from dnc to ta, file name than the+ sign and youn are done i love ours

Donnelson, I am real interested in putting one on our Burny 3, just curious as to how it worked out for you? We have been using floppies and it is a PIA, thanks Jon P.

Your control is likely a revision or 2 above mine.
The -5 control will take mega memory compared to mine.
My 400 and some KB is max on my control.
I don't remember off the top of my head but I think I have a -3
