I have a 2000 Fadal VMC2216. It is a factory rebuild in overall good condition. I just have a question that maybe some of you here could answer. Recently, the VMC has started making a dragging/shuddering sound when it rapids in the Y axis. The machine still makes a great cut and holds position without issue, yet the noise is troublesome (it can actually rattle the covers).
If any of you have some idea what might be causing this I'd appreciate your input.
Just a guess but could it maybe be the resolver? You can try the remove the motor and then turn the ballscrew by hand to make sure it’s smooth. If it seems in good order you can try removing the resolver and feeling it’s bearings. Before you remove it try spinning the motor shaft and see if you can feel it before going through the hassle of removing it.
Note I don’t know too much that’s just what I’ve read.
So take it with a grain of salt.
Is this a AC machine? (Square motors). I would guess Motor/encoder or amplifier. All three axis use the same amp type and same motor type. Try first swapping out the y-axis amp with the x-axis amp.See if the problem moves to the X axis. The Y axis motor is a bit of a pain to swap but try that next if it isn't the amp.
See if it is the cover itself. Once in a while some chips will get wedged in mine and it sounds awful. Otherwise test the drivers as mentioned already. Pretty easy to do that by just swapping the X and Y and jogging it.
