    Default Used Fadal. Pitted Ways

    Howdy,

I have inspected a used machine with box ways. The machine wasn't used often. Backlash is good "<.0002" and spindle runout is good (<.0001). Upon inspecting the ways there is a line of rust with has pitted the ways in the home positions. I would estimate the pits are .001 to .002 deep. The rest of the ways look good. Most likely the machine collected condensation or, the coolant was mixed wrong, and the water settled at the end of the wiper where it rusted.

Does anyone have this issue or an opinion if this is worth getting. The price is cheap.

    Thanks

Very very typical symptom of an idle boxed way machine. Dont sweat it.

We have had good luck with our Fadals milling mostly soft steel and aluminum up to 5 axis. We are always looking for spare parts :) If you have a broken down Fadal give a shout.

Thanks for your input. As of Monday, the 'new' old machine will be installed. I am trading a 2016 machine that is 10 years older BUT this older 97 machine is a 2040 with the extended 28" Z travel.

    I shall keep everyone posted.

Yes, there is an acidic factor to the mobile vactra 2.... If you ever pulled a table or a saddle you will see the way oil grooves in the turcite acid etched into the way. It is normal in my opinion...
