good morning guys, I have a trm (which rigid tapping in not an option/available). I have been hand tapping holes in the parts I make (which sucks when there are many) Would someone mind explaining the basics of compression tapping and is that the way to go? I am using solidworks/camworks for cad/cam. Will I have to get my post modified? Thanks in advance Mark |

| Your cad cam and post make no difference. When using a compensating tap holder program your feedrate to match the pitch of the thread per rev. The holder will compensate for potential lead errors as well as compensate for lead errors while ramping RPM up/down during reversing. Quite simple. If you are doing a lot of tapping you should be doing it in your machine to bring your profit margin up.

| I get the 1/16 as the thread lead which is the q # in format 1 the only other # I thought you needed is the F # (in a g84 tapping cycle) which designates the rpm what am I missing? Mark |

| Sorry In format 2 I don't use a Q This is a line from a program (rigid tapping) it is for 32 TPI. G84.1R15.18 X-2.6594 Y1.5348 Z14.75 F5. S160. You will have to read your manual or get help from someone familiar with F1

| or s=160 f=10. For a 3/8-16 tap... Keep in mind taps have a surface feet rate as well. I would run the 3/8-16 tap at s=560 f=40. on aluminum. Remeber S always equals TPI and if you use F equalling 10 you can multiply for surface feet from there |

| fourperf I suggest reading the last section of this http://www.compumachine.com/Support/...xed_Cycles.pdf (if you haven't already) Carbide Yea my SFM is stupid slow - I am funny that way. I have never used a G99 (ever) in any of my programs. Good bad or otherwise I guess I don't know any better and everything always works. My table is 0 so my tap starts 15.18 up and travels to 14.75 (not tapping up at all (please re-read above quip now)). Also none of your examples have a G84.2 (prepare for G84.1) in them; how does this work? The code in my other post is from a proven program. I am always looking to improve to ways.
