    Spindle not operable from control

I am powering up a new (to me) VMC15. I am wiring it up single phase. The power keeps cutting out internally, sounds like a big breaker trips, then keeps trying to reset automatically. This happens every time I try to run the spindle from an M3, however I can run the spindle from the manual keypad on the spindle drive. Once in a while it does the same thing on an axis move. I can MDI X, Y and Z around quite a bit but a hard move, or in every case of a spindle command it trips something out.

As it is automatically trying to reset itself, usually there are a couple axis cards that dont get a light back on, so I kill the power to the machine and try again a few times till it powers up clean. Then the same routine all over again.....

Any ideas? I did see the machine run, but then it was shipped across the country to my shop.

    THanks
    Scott

Your power is not configured correctly
We have had good luck with our Fadals milling mostly soft steel and aluminum up to 5 axis. We are always looking for spare parts :) If you have a broken down Fadal give a shout.

Thanks Carbide......I figured you'd have some input to this one. SO since the first post in this thread I have made some progress on the power configuration. I now have a nice clean 230V to legs 1 and 3 of the spindle drive. I have a nice 90VAC to the amps (from a variable transformer), and 118VAC to the DC power supply (from wall now) and that side of things.

I can still run the spindle from the Baldor keypad in the back. I can run x,y,z all over the place nice and smooth. As soon as I try to do anything with the spindle, the control faults and resets itself. One time I got an error #10 spindle driver fault, motor overload.

I have tried jumpering legs 2 and 3 to the spindle drive with similar results. Any thoughts?

make shure Spindle controler card is the right one with the AC eprom (xyz cards are the same as this one); -4-5 sys spindle card has a soldered jumper A+B (not shure) Also check relays back cabinet!

Are you sure you can run that machine on single phase power? According to the Fadal Installation manual, "The Fadal VMC line is designed for three phase input power. However, three phase power is not always available. If this is the case, Fadal offers a single phase input power option. All Fadal machines are capable of operating on single-phase line input." and later "This option can be ordered on a new machine and can be installed in the field. Some wiring changes are also necessary. Please see the single-phase transformer charts and wiring instructions." Have you followed the instructions for this?

What's different from when it ran last? Did it previously have 3-phase power?

That was the first alarm bell that went off in my head when I read your first post.

Just wanted to close this issue here - The problem was a nasty one to troubleshoot but Kevin DeLong of Tier One Machinery in Jamestown NY got it up and running. It was the DC power supply, which was dropping out temporarily when the spindle drive was drawing from the DC supply. Also thanks to Dave DeCaussen who also recommended looking there.

As the saga continues, you can see my other posts now that i fried the video board and mother board!!

And yes, it IS running on single phase and I did not use the T814 or the T813 transformers. But it has been a science project with lots of help from Dave and Kevin.
