    Noob Trouble with G84

Hi, I have a VMC-15, running Format 1, teaching myself as I go.

I wrote a program to spot drill, pilot drill, tap-drill and then tap a 1/4-20 thru hole, as a self-teaching project.

I do not have rigid tap, running a Lyndex quick change floating holder. (bilz style)

The tap is Tool 5. I have H5 setup to be 0.5" above the part surface as recommended in the manuals.

    So I have

    E1 X1.0 Y-1.0

    (the other operations, then)

    M6T5
    H5
    R0+0
    G8
    G84 Z-1.0 F250. Q0.05 G99
    G0 H0
    M2

The other operations work perfectly. However when the tap is in the spindle, the result is the tool goes to H5. Spindle never turns on, it rapids to absolute Z=0 then proceeds to go Home.

Earlier, I had H5 at 0.1" above the part. Then I did a G91 G1 Z0.4 F400 with the idea I was setting up the R0 plane (last Z location before cycle). The machine interpreted that as G90 G0 Z0.4 (absolute Z=0.4) before it went Home. So I felt like I was doing double movement plus it did not work, so I took out the G91 G1 and just adjusted the H5 offset up 0.4" in the tool table.

I feel like a muttonhead but can't see what's wrong...hoping one of you experienced gents can help me please. Thanks in advance!

BTW, I should also add I did the "lighting upgrade" to my machine, similar to Scadvice "7 year rebuild" - ran #14 THHN thru the cabinet, the twin 65W fluorescent fixtures are less amperage than the 150W single incandescent I previously had, its cool and BRIGHT in there now Thanks for that tip!

I went out and replaced the G84 with G84.1 on the same line....feeling hopeful I hit the green button...and...same result

I studied the manual (Sec 4) some more and it has an M3SX000 descriptor in one of the examples. And the "general fixed cycle" asks for the spindle on as a requirement...

    ....headed for the shop...

Ok thats not it... same result just with the spindle running fwd after I gave it M3 S250 before H5...
