While squaring up a fixture yesterday I noticed that I'm getting a Y axis jump of almost a thou while moving the X. So, time to tighten up the ways, I know the manuals go into fairly good detail, but they always manage to leave something out. Does anybody have any good tips, or stories on this. Also, how much of my time will this take since its the first time I've had to do it. Another quick question, my spindle chiller lines are clogged, not like its much of a chiller, but its better than nothing, any good tips on this one, before I dig into it? I've already cleaned the filter, and disconnected the lines from the pump and tried blowing them out, but they are definitely clogged. Thanx. |

| i can't help you on any tips for your way adjustments but i can offer some perspective on that chiller of yours. Like you said, any chiller is better than none! Soo true... You could be like a friend of mine (you know that guy that you mention when you wanna hide), who trusted the maintenance guy with maintenance... Well this maintenance guy did not want to be troubled with opening the door to the chiller to see if the pump was pumping, so he installed a 129 cent spinner flow indicator. This flow dial had an inside diameter of 3/32" instead of the 1/4" diameter tubing that Fadal uses. This reduces the GPM by 63%! He is proud of this little device so he shows it to the Fadal factory trained tech who say's: "good idea" (prolly cause he knows he'll be comin back down real soon to replace the over heated spindle)... Now tha is jus such a good idea, now that we got the all knowing repairman behind the good idea, le's put one o dose on ever machine in da shop. Time goes by now, spindles heat up, spindles are burned up, replaced and nobody asks why... The factory trained repairman is not the wiser, but neither are we, (oh, I mean my friend). A fresh pair of eyes sees the little flow spinner stuck over the hole, remember that 3/32" inside diameter hole? Zero flow now, cause the flow meter has been installed on the sucking side of the pump! Houston I think we have a problem! The "pick up" negative pressure side of the pump would sometimes suck the little ball of the spinner flow indicator thingamajig over the only hole thru which all dowfrost liquid must flow. When this occured, zero cooling was happenin. You just cannot believe how long it took my friend to get those ideotic flow indiactors removed from all those machines, even after replacing spindles and who knows what other consequences to the accuracy of the cooled ball screws... Unbelievable! If only Fadal had taken the time to really evaluate the dumb idea that this customer of theirs had done to their working spindle chiller design. After all, when this thing is working, the spindle can run all day long at 10k with no excess heat. Sincerely, get that thing working...

I would like to know also the best procedure for doing this. I've read the manuals and some parts of the adjustment procedure are not to clear. My area of concern since I have a 4020, is the center rail adjustment. |

| Gibb Adjustment Thoughts 1. Are you sure its your Gibbs? Move X axis in both the positive and negative direction in manual mode with your over ride set at 30%. Check what your loads are in each direction. If the value's are the same in both directions you may want to look elsewhere for the cause of your problem. It could be in your thrust bearings or ball-screw. A quick check there is to place a little grease in the center hole on the non-drive end of the ball-screw to hold a ball bearing place. This bearing will give you a clean surface to take an indicator reading.. once you have the indicator positioned move your axis back and forth. If you see the dial jumping around, you should replace or tighten your thrust bearing. 2. If your Gibbs are the trouble and you need to take off the waycovers... You should go ahead and inspect/replace your way lube metering pins. Hope this helps, JR
