Exclamation Problem with RS232 connection through long cable??!!

We have a VMC20 and can only get the machine to DNC feed if the computer is sitting with a 4ft (or so) cable connecting them. We have built a new office area and want to have the computer about 30 feet away? Whats the problem??!

I have used RS232 in the past with runs longer than 30ft with no problem.

Have you tried a different PC. Maybe something is wrong with your port. Another issue I have seen on longer cable runs is you have to slow the baud rate down at the machine and at the PC. I think for most machines 100' is the longest recommended. I have run over 150' before by slowing the baud rate down.

And make sure the cable is not strung over the shop lights. I have run over 100ft no problem.

You can DNC up 100 ft with no issue IF you have no noises being injected into the cable. Can you transfer files to and from the machine from the new location? If you can than either you have a low signal voltage (doubtful) or the routing of you cable is causing signal distortion. Keep away from ANY source of RF, I.E. flouresent lights, EDM, high power lines, enen those inside the walls.
