It looks like a power chuck off a lathe. does it have threads on the ID?
they work by pulling and pushing on the threaded area on the ID.
HI there !
We have a rotary , on it a chuck. Now the rotary works fine , at least it moves like it should.
But the chuck is a mistery to me ... how the hell can i open it ?? There are some hexa screws on the chuck's "surface" around but it wont move a bit.
looks like this one :

I agree with D.D. Ive seen one like that with an auxiliary hydraulic unit that was used to clamp the chuck.

Hi !
I did found the solution for the problem
There is a square "key" hole but only one. and of course it is at the bottom /now/. So probably thats for opening the stuff !...
I only saw chucks with 3 or 4 "key" holes....never with only 1.

Remount the chuck so that the Square key is at the top when the index marks are in line. The hex keys on the outside circumferance are to adjust the circular run out of the chuck to the centerline of the rotary.

Usually these chucks are mounted to the back plate with a locating pin and cannot be mounted differently. The answer is actually to get the 4th axis mounted up on a machine and to use the control to rotate it to the desired position to tighten and loosen the jaws. During operation, the stopping point of the 4th axis can be added to the programming for access or the operator can go to manual mode to change the position.
