    VMC40 Orientation Failure

I get frequent orientation failures (about one in twenty tool changes) and it's driving me crazy not to mention productivity going in the crapper.
I checked the settings in SETP and it looks like everything is set at factory default (orientation factor = 10, etc).
What is happening is that I get the clunk-clunk as the spindle tries to stop at the proper orientation and after about eight tries it faults.
My maintenance manual isn't clear enough to point me toward a corrective action, only saying air to be >80psi (it's at 95).
Anybody got any experience with this problem???

If it is an old Fadal, must have a Blue Air Mac Valves Assambly; they get contaminated with oil. Check the Orient Arme and the Bimba piston.
Also check the spindle pulley worned out; check the hall effect switch and magnet.
If everything is Ok; change the parameter (10) to 12.

I think you mean to say water not oil. You actually want some synthetic air oil to circulate through the macs to keep the brass sleeves lubed up. If your mac valves are warm to the touch they may need to be taken apart and cleaned and lubed. If not then the mac isnt the issue.
We have had good luck with our Fadals milling mostly soft steel and aluminum up to 5 axis. We are always looking for spare parts :) If you have a broken down Fadal give a shout.

We had the orientation problem, and a cleaning/adjustment of the Hall effect sensor did the trick.

Thanks guys. I finally found the drawing of the Orientation Bridge Assembly which should help. I'll dig into it this weekend and hope that I can fix the problem This is a clean but used piece of equip so it's had its share of problems.
