adding a zip or floppy on the cheap?

I've got a 88HS (around 1997, a -4 system) and I want to add a zip drive, or even floppy - without spending $2000 for the Fadal kit. It is possible to just connect a floppy or zip? Or is there some magic interface board in the kit?

    Thanks!

In the Fadal documentation there is a serial board (PCB-0156), another board (ELE-0966) and some wiring and a cable.
