Spindle Drive

I have a Fadal VMC15 M#914-15 with a Baldor Vector spindle drive. The machine has a problem running between 1550 and 1650 RPMs. The machine has a two speed gear box, low being from 0 - 2500 and high 2501-8000. The spindle load meter is at 90% from 100 rpm to about 1800 then it drops off to about 20%. While the rpm is around 1600 the spindle will pulsate, the RPMs are not constant. On the readout of the spindle drive the frequency and the voltages are all over the place, but above and below the previous stated RPMs she runs fine, and the freq./voltage are constant. Has anyone ever seen this problem and if so how did you fix it? All help is greatly appreciated thanks, Monty.

I see two possibilities here. First is a spindle encoder may have an issue. Second your spindle motor is a 7500 rpm wye/delta setup. You may have a winding issue in the motor itself.
There is an outside possibility that the Baldor drive has an issue. Have you tried the Auto Tune on the drive and/or reload the factory parameters?

I have not tried either, loading params or auto tuning. This is my 1st time working on a Fadal. What are the steps for the auto tune? And if I can find the factory settings for params, what is the procedure for loading and are there any pass codes to get through? I'm use to working with Yaskawa and Fanuc machines.

Thanks,
Monty

Dave de Caussin (the "D" in Fadal) is running a business that might be able to help: http://fadalvmcparts.com/spindledrive.html

Cheers,

Is it David or is it his son? I seem to recall that it was his son, not David.

First, look on the site and see.

Second, why does it matter? And even if it did, see #1, go look on the site.

Cheers,

BW

It doesn't matter really -grin-

I was just thinking back to 1989... when I bought my first new Fadal (VMC-40)and was on a tour of the Fadal plant just before it shipped. Unless my memory is wrong .(And it could be at my age!!) he was my guide then. He looked to be about 10 or 12 years older than me...I'm 63 now... also I had a conversation with one of the Fadal son's and I think it was David's ...
It's tough getting old...
