I realised I signed up on these...

Hi everyone,
I realised I signed up on these forums in 2007 and have never logged into them again :(
I logged in and it told me there were 400,000 posts since my last visit :o

Despite not logging in much, I have used this website countless times for daydreaming, planning, and now the start of executing my own CNC build. I am looking to build a desktop machine for PCBs, plastic parts and engraving.

I have used a lot of the Roland EGX, MDX and modela series at schools and companies in the past and after about 4 1/2 years of brainstorming, decided I want a machine like that at home as well :)

Full details are scant at the moment but once the ball is rolling I will have a build thread and hope to get opinions, help and knowledge along the way.

You'll be hearing from me again soon

Hey guys

Hey guys

I've been kicking around the idea of getting a CNC mill for a while now. I'm starting to get a little more serious about the purchase and am doing some research. So; here I am :)

I live in the Portland OR area and work as a CAD/FEA modeler. I'm what you'd call an expert with SolidWorks and dabble with Unigraphics. I have a psychotic passion for sportbikes and enjoy flying RC thermal duration gliders and helicopters (really; if it flies, I enjoy it)...

So you can see where the interest in a CNC mill comes from. I've started working with acrylic/plastics lately and have done some really cool projects but its a real pain with the tools I have. Miter Box, hand held drill, dremel, scroll saw, table saw and a hand full of clamps. Thats it... I can hold a .005 tolerance cut with my table saw though :) I just don't know how square it is...

I've looked at Syil, Tormach, and this new Levil CNC I found on the forum here. I'd like to get something nice but I'm having a hard time swallowing the 10k... What I know...

1 - It has to be 110v
2 - Mobile... I rent so its going to live in the garage on a stand that will have to roll up the ramp of a U-Haul some day.
3 - Envelope around 14x10x8 or so
4 - Making chips for $5000 would be great but would really need to keep it under or very close to $8000...

As far as what hardware is better or what all the cool kids have, I'm clueless... controllers, motors, ball screws... I know what they are (kinda of) but have now clue what hot and whats not, thats why I'm here :)

See you guys around

Seeking alternative ideas to glass etching

Hi everyone,

I would like to find out another approach to etching glass. I am new to cnc and have experienced using a laser to etch glass. Awhile back at a university they had these cheaper laser engravers that I was told didn't really cost too much. I am interested in how much these things can cost. What is the cheapest one I can find so that I can try an alternative way of sandblast glass etching used for current projects?

I know its always best to get the best equipment, but I will be just using it as a hobby and maybe little profits on the side every once in awhile. Let me know of any suggestions and what prices I am looking at. Thanks

Morning all.

I'm new to this here site, so i thought i'd better say hello. My name's Ed and I work for PT Engineers in Rugby. Im 27, a graduate DT teacher (dont ask!) working as a Turner/fitter, and am responsible for as much machine maintanence as we can manage in-house. Ive nearly finished rebuilding a 1951 Berthiez Vertical borer with an 8' table, and I'm half way through rebuilding a 1988 Carnaghi twin table vertical borer.

I learnt all my CNC here on Fanuc 5 and 15T controls, have had a dabble with Fagor and am currently trying to understand Siemens Sinumerik 3T. Im trained in Mastercam X2 which i use for programming on a regualar basis, but dont ask me about posts - its all double dutch to me!

I've been a model engineer for as long as i can remember, and have always had a workshop at home. Ive built a number of steam engines, and am the vice chairman of the Rugby Model Engineering Society.

Hopefully, dispite my lack of knowledge I'll be able to impart some help to others here...I'll do my best!

CNCzone has been a big help if deciding how to trouble shoot problems. I found most of what I needed in past post.
Also thanks to CNC4PC, Gecko, Homeshopcnc and USdigital for their quick shipping and tech support.
Special thanks to C.D. who talked me into this. He drops everything when I need help and did not laugh too loud when I fried a card, His experience and opinion is greatly valued.
All have made converting my 60 year old mind to CNC a fun and very interesting experience.
