Right back at ya Inuk

Regarding the bits, I don't know what you are cutting or what you are using for tooling, but I cut a lot of hard Dymondwood panels and I buy coated carbide 2 and 3 flute end mills. They are cheaper and outlast noncoated carbide spiral router bits. Ever try any?

Never tried them. Don't work with wood much. Today it's aluminum with Onsrud O flute carbides. We do plastics too so its pretty much all Oflutes.

Was curious about the dymondwood you mentioned...cool stuff, nvr seen it before, hows it work for you ?

Sorry about taking this thread off topic.

Inuk,
A customer sends me 18" x 32" sheets of Dymondwood in 1/8" and 1/4" thicknesses and I cut close tolerance parts out of it for them. It's great to work with but because it's made from thin layers of hardwoods that are stacked together with resin and pressed together under extreme pressure and heat, the material is pretty darn hard. Uncoated carbide cutters dull real fast on it, so I tried TiCN coated end mills with great success. Half the price of a spiral router bit, and twice the cut life.

Hi Phil,

I use these 1/8" 3 flute tools so I can squeeze as many parts per sheet as possible and I run the 1/8" thick panels at about 25 IPM at 19,000 RPM on my 4'x8' router. The customer requires a smooth edge finish on the parts and I have to maintain a .007" tolerance on the OAL or I could really rip on them.

I use those 1/8" bits on the 1/4" thick panels too but I slow the feed down a little. I'm going to be doing these on my new little Quick machine shortly so maybe I'll be able to run a little faster.

What size material are you getting?

Hey Skip, 31.5" assorted sheets for trial. Ordered tooling also. Thanks for the link and feeds. I'll post photos when cut.
Cheers
