Default Suregrave Roration S - motor not running

    HI Folks
Asking on behalf of a friend...based over here in Ireland <g>
Said friend has a Suregrave Rotation S engraving machine, used for engraving jewellery, trophies, glassware etc.

He was happily engraving some glassware the other day when, in his own words...

"Was running when the motor stopped. Finished job and then wouldn't start anymore. Was onto a suregrave engineer and he said to disconnect the spindle cable and see if it would work. It is going okay since without the motor. Was a slight smell when I started it up after plugging out the spindle cable.
Everything works okay only for the motor. Was told it was kick back from the motor that damaged the motherboard."

He's been quoted in the region of €1,000 to replace the motherboard - which entails returning the machine back to the UK, with a turnround time of several weeks.
As the machine is currently running and engraving metal OK, and it's his only machine, he's reluctant to part with it (both for the time & the money).

I offered to ask on the forum, to see if anybody had any insights or experience.
I've a background in electronics and engineering, and it seemed to me that, if the motor driving circuitry has been damaged (does nobody design in fuses nowadays?) then it shouldn't be impossible to feed the engraving motor with power from a separate, manually-switched, power supply - for a lot less than €1,000.

    Any thoughts please?
    Thanks
    Adrian

Depends on the nature of the motor, 3ph, DC, BLDC Universal etc?

    HI Al
    Thanks for the reply.
I've not seen the machine yet - but I'm told it's one of these

    https://www.google.ie/imgres?imgurl=...act=mrc&uact=8

    So it's a fairly light-duty machine.
I'd imagine it to be DC or mains, and very much 'fractional horsepower'.
I'll take a look at the machine in the next few days, then I should know a bit more..
    Thanks
    Adrian
