Hi....I was going to walk this path with a simulator too as I'm new to CNC, but you can't really beat having the mill of your choice operating with the G code of your own.

.I use a pointed wooden dowel in the spindle and a soft Polystyrene foam block marked with the points I want to test the G code on..........this is a safety feature and you can touch down on the foam with the wood dowel and see if the code produces the tool path you planned on........only in a 2D format, but as it's a learning curve for manual G code programming, the end result is simple and not a disaster if you make a wrong code move.

A lot depends on if you intend to write your own code which is what I'm doing.

A more complex program produced with CAM is a different matter as there are Z moves that a wooden stick won't be of any use for.
